Ecom Hell, How To Make Money in E-commerce and Not Get Burned

In 2013 I finished the book Ecom Hell.

The big pushed for me to write this book was that I got tired of hearing “the gurus” telling entrepreneurs the following:

Set it and forget it
You can do this part time in your underwear
Just drop ship everything
Its cheap to start (while true), its not cheap to maintain
You don’t have to market it, just write good content
Basically implying that “build it and they will come” attitude.

Running an ecommerce business is sooo far from any of implied “easy” button above. While its not rocket science, its hard work. All those ecommerce business owners that toil day in and day out, sometimes putting in as much as 12 to 16 hours a day, its basically insulting those people who must be scratching there head wondering why its has not be easy for them.

I’m very pragmatic. If I could have just gotten away with writing a huge checklist without explaining why, I probably would have done that. Nevertheless, the book is filled with checklist and bullet points to help the reader, hopefully the entrepreneur benchmark against best practices. My goal is to help entrepreneurs be prepared, if you understand what’s coming then you can sort and prioritized your goals and what you need to do.

There is NO EASY Button not in ecommerce, not in any business. Those who make it look easy is because they have done their homework and they were prepared.

Its also useful for veteran ecommerce owners who want to review how they operate their business to ensure they got all their ducts in order.

Famous quote from Mark Cuban to live by: “Work like there’s someone else working 24 hours a day to take it all away from you” – so wouldn’t being prepare help a little, I hope so.

Here’s a few book review from Amazon:

Shirley is fantastic! The book is straight to the point, and details nearly every potential pitfall you will experience while building an eCommerce company. This is a rare book that really allows you to get insight from someone who has been through it all, and in the end triumphed by growing her company very large and selling it. I had a few follow up questions asking for advice and she reached out to me personally. You can’t beat that! Truly great and I would 100% recommend if you are looking to get into ecommerce, or build on your existing company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ecommerce Owners Keep Close to Your Desk, June 29, 2013

If you run an ecommerce company, Tan’s ecomhell should be close at hand. This is not a book you read once and put on the bookshelf. Read it completely one time through to get a jist of what’s covered in the book then refer back to it as day to day issues arise. The author does not theorize about online businesses, she’s been there and done that. Although selling online has changed a lot since she started her company, the basics still need to be followed. Tan’s writing style is to the point. The book is an easy read but has so much information, your head will hurt! Break it up into chunks and you’ll get a lot of value from ecomhell. As an ecommerce owner, we’ve been there and done that. This book reminded us of some of the mistakes we made and it would have been nice to have a book like this when we started. If you’re considering starting an online business, read this book.

I truly wish I’d had this book a few years ago. Running ecommerce stores is ridiculously hard… I know because I owned two online stores from 2005 until 2012. I really could have used the advice Shirley Tan shares in Ecom Hell.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! The 5 stars are not enough. As an eCommerce developer, I am constantly looking for material that will help our clients take their business to the next level. I came across the book on Amazon and it is absolutely brilliant! Many of the points Shirley addressed are questions we bring up to our clients during the discovery phase in building a solid eCommerce system that will convert! Shirley added something none of us can ever add- her valuable personal experience. She’s done it. and she’s done it well! ‘eCom Hell’ has helped me see things from the client’s perspective and I’m sure I’d be able to help them even better now.

Here’s a the link to get a copy of the book, while I love reading some books on Kindle, My book is much more useful as a physical copy, where you can jot down notes and write all over the book to high light key take aways that you can apply to your business.
